Ian Cognito

Veteran comic
Category: Barnstaple Fringe

Starts: Friday, May 30, 2008

Ian Cognito is one of the best comics on the national circuit, a veteran who clearly knows what he’s doing as he spits his darkly humorous vitriol over an unsuspecting crowd. Outspoken, opinionated, and totally clued up, this man’s take on the world will have you convinced and convulsed (with laughter).

"Cognito puts them all in the shade. If you want to know what’s wrong with New Britain, Ian Cognito’s going to tell you. And if you don’t, you’d better keep your mouth shut. Just stunning." - Phil Daoust, The Guardian

"Ian Cognito is up there with the greats. He rants - but not without thought." - Evening Standard

"There is no doubting Ian Cognito’s blazing talent as a stand-up." - Time Out

After the performance there will be live DJ Wendy May performing with the bar open till 1am.
A bit about Wendy May...

As a ‘punk buyer’ for Virgin Records Wendy filled her life with gigs, and in the early 80’s joined the hillbilly punk ska band The Boothill Footappers. They became label mates with Billy Bragg and the Housemartins, toured extensively, had a debut hit with Get Your Feet Out of My Shoes and recorded an album, which featured the legendary John Martyn.

The band broke-up in 1989 and Wendy began a club night - Wendy May’s Locomotion, a non-pretentious, alternative club in London’s Kentish Town. Frequented by the likes of Madness, Costello, Paul Weller and The Pogues, it also featured in Nick Hornby’s book 31 Songs. The Locomotion lasted 10 years, and had grown to include a comedy club upstairs where household names performed to include Lee Evans, Jo Brand, Phill Jupitus and Mark Lamaar.

As a DJ Wendy has presented on London’s Capital Radio, played a Glastonbury and co-presented the last series of The Tube for Channel 4 with Jools Holland & Paula Yates.

Following a dramatic lifestyle change and move to North Devon Wendy began a Soul Club night at The Palladium in Bideford and in November 2007 the monthly Barnstaple Comedy Club at The Riverfront; with the aim to create a club where people who maybe didn’t want to be part of the nightlife notorious for young drinkers, but wanted to meet up regularly with like-minded people and laugh themselves silly.

Today the Comedy Club is a roaring success!!
