The Threepenny Opera

By Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill
Category: Touring Theatres and Fayres

Starts: Wednesday, June 18, 2008
Ends: Friday, June 20, 2008

As part of this year’s Festival, North Devon College proudly presents a milestone of twentieth century musical theatre – The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill at The Factory, Barnstaple’s newest arts venue.

First performed in Berlin in 1928, Brecht’s text creates a world of beggars, thieves and prostitutes in which there is no honour; every character would sell out any other were there an advantage to be gained. Weill’s music transforms saccharine, old-fashioned opera and operetta forms into sharp, political satire with the sound of 1920s Berlin dance bands and cabaret. A milestone of twentieth century musical theatre, this is the show which inspired Cabaret and Chicago.

‘This is the most wonderfully insulting music I have come across.’ Walter Kerr
