North Devon Folk Festival

This year's North Devon Folk Festival promises to be even bigger, better and brighter.

Acts include:
Melanie Safka
Usually known professionally simply as Melanie, she is best known for her hits, "Brand New Key", "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" and "What Have They Done To My Song, Ma?". Melanie has sold over 25 million records over the course of her career.

Bellowhead
Eleven piece folk-big-band Bellowhead have exploded onto the festival scene and fast become one of the most talked about bands on the contemporary folk circuit. Formed in 2004 by the duo Spiers & Boden to headline the first Oxford Folk Festival, Bellowhead have played some of the top festivals in the UK and Europe including Cambridge Folk Festival, The Big Chill, Summer Sundae and Roskilde Festival. In 2005, 2007 and again in 2008 they received the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Live Act.

Eddi Reader
Scotland-born Eddi Reader was an '80s pop star in the UK, where her band Fairground Attraction had a number 1 hit with the supercatchy "Perfect." Now, as a solo artist, her sound has matured; quiet acoustic arrangements and gentle harmonies put her lush voice front and center.
Albums such as Candyfloss and Medicine and Angels & Electricity established her as a thoughtful songwriter and interpreter, with an affinity for wistful songs of longing and loss -- and a nice sideline in what used to be called "message" songs, which call to the listener to think about war and peace, the Earth and our place in it.
Reader has also become a noted interpreter of the poems of Robert Burns.

Transglobal Underground
(sometimes written as Trans-Global Underground or simply as TGU) is a London-based music collective who specialise in a fusion of western, oriental and African music styles (sometimes labelled as "world fusion" or "ethno-techno"). Their early albums featured Natacha Atlas as lead singer and their single "Temple Head" was used in a Coca-Cola advertising campaign for the 1996 Olympic Games.

Friday evening is a free event organised by Tom and Barbara Brown featuring Ian Hudson, Martyn Babb plus a special guest, to be announced.

The evening will finish at 23:00.
