Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles

Presented by Bristol Old Vic Theatre School
Category:  Comedy & Drama

Starts: Friday, May 29, 2009

Against the measured, idyllic background of the Dorset landscape, Hardy's most popular story unwinds with the inevitability of a Greek tragedy…

Tess has all the most enviable qualities of a woman - intelligence, sensitivity, independence of mind, integrity, compassion - but against a rigid class system and a choking moralistic society, which places respectability higher than morality and goodness, these qualities are to little avail.

The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School brings to this production its usual vibrant energy and sparkling young talent, cocooning Hardy's tale in a framework of song and music - the perfect entertainment for a summer's evening in the West Country.
