Matthew Bourne Summer Screenings - now on sale!

A trio of wonderful screenings at the Landmark Theatre from the celebrated choreographer

North Devon Theatres are very excited to announce that a trio of wonderful dance productions by the leading choreographer Matthew Bourne will be screened at the Landmark Theatre, Ilfracombe over the summer of 2016 and tickets are on sale from Friday 5th February.

The Matthew Bourne Summer Screenings will feature three of his most celebrated productions, beginning with Swan Lake on Thursday 5th May at 7.30pm, followed by Sleeping Beauty on Thursday 9th June at 7.30pm, and rounding off with The Car Man on Thursday 21st July at 7.30pm.

Matthew Bourne is widely hailed as the UK’s most popular and successful Choreographer/Director. He is the creator of the world’s longest running ballet production with Swan Lake, a five-time Olivier Award winner, and the only British director to have won the Tony Award for both Best Choreographer and Best Director of a Musical.

Bourne’s now legendary production of Swan Lake is perhaps best known for replacing the traditional female corps de ballet with a menacing male ensemble. It premiered at London’s Sadler’s Wells in 1995 as a triumphant re-interpretation of one of ballet’s classic stories, turning tradition upside down and taking the dance world by storm, garnering more than 30 international theatre awards. The stellar cast featured in this screening includes the magnificent Richard Winsor (currently starring in BBC1’s Casualty) as the lead Swan/Stranger, Dominic North as The Prince and Nina Goldman as The Queen.

Sleeping Beauty saw Bourne return to the music of Tchaikovsky following Swan Lake to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his company, New Adventures. The sumptuous, gothic fairytale is given a new twist as the story begins in 1890, a time when fairies and vampires fed the imagination, before moving forward in time to the modern day. The choreographer’s new scenario introduces several characters not seen in Petipa’s famous ballet or Grimm’s fairytale, and creates a truly bewitching spectacle that will appeal to all ages.

The award-winning The Car Man is loosely based on Bizet’s popular opera Carmen and has one of the most thrilling and instantly recognisable scores in classical music. The 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory of the opera becomes a greasy garage-diner in 1960s America where the dreams and passions of a small-town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge. Bourne’s vivid storytelling takes in a wealth of cinematic references, creating a powerful and uncompromising vision of small-town America.

Matthew Bourne’s productions feature at the top of many people’s ‘must see’ lists, and we are delighted to be able to bring these three excellent shows to North Devon on the Landmark Theatre’s big screen this summer.

There is a special combined ticket rate when booking for all three screenings of just £30 per person.

To celebrate the Matthew Bourne Summer Screenings, North Devon Theatres will be serving Prosecco and a selection of canapés before each show for just £7.50 per person per show, or £18 when booking for all three. Advance booking via the Box Office is required.
